Barbara
Barbara Vinson: My mother always said, if you owe somebody something, you need to try to pay it back. I was, I was in $73,000 worth of credit card debt when I went to Consumer Credit Counseling Service.
My husband liked to go places, and he was, liked to play golf, and go to golf tournaments, and family reunions, everything that said 'go', he was wanting to do it. So we had numerous cards, and we used them unwisely, 'cause we made a lot of these trips on these credit cards. We needed to pay off some of this debt before he passed so it wouldn't get left, you know. I mean, he wanted to try and do that, so he thought of here, CCS [sic].
But what I did was to go back and, I went to the board, and they were hiring part time teachers again, and I had retired at that time, both of us. So I got the part-time job of being a EIP teacher, part-time. And that amount of money that I made, and some would be left over, would pay that payment that I had to pay each month.
Every time I would get a bill from CCS [sic], and it showed one of the cards paid off, this just really gave me, you know, the incentive to do more and to keep it going. Every time they paid off a card for me, I felt good. I said, well, I'll just keep going. And the money I was putting on that card, you know, they would put it on another card. And so, finally, it got down, and I said, well, I'm going to stick with it, and I kept working, and kept working, and it happened for us.
'Cause that is the best thing I ever done, was to go to CCS [sic] and to get them to get me set up to pay off those debts. And I'll always love them; if there's anybody who's in that trouble, this is where I would tell them to come.
